Title: HIGH-END COWBOY KARAJA | Single Most Beautiful Karaja I've Ever Seen | ~ 10 x 12
Size: ~ 10 x 12
Age: Antique, Turn of the Century, Early 1900's or older
Pile: Low/Med Pile with authentic age-related wear and patina. I'm having this piece fully restored so it will be in MINT ANTIQUE CONDITION, yet still keeping its age-old aesthetic. This piece without question deserves tip-top condition.
About: This piece reminds me of a WILD COWBOY - "this town ain't big enough for the both of us", and after that shootout, this Antique Karaja was the one that prevailed. A next-level carpet with the most sensational muted terracotta variations, and that soft denim-to-seafoam-to-pale cloud-blue abrash is unmistakably beautiful and of the period this piece was woven. The perfect antique beige and almond browns that shift to cashew-khaki, and then back to a chestnutty brown add an excellent earthiness to this piece. I would put this up there against ANY Northwest Tribal Rug; Serapi, Bakshayesh, and any of the likes - this piece perfectly embodies the RAW nature of nomadic tribal weaving, while elegantly capturing the heart and soul of the independent weavers that came together and manifested a dream into reality with organic wool and natural dyes from the earth. What adds even more fuel to the fire is that back in the day these pieces were seen as "lesser than" in comparison to the finer and more architected pieces - and what do you know - fast forward 100 years and it is these "lesser than" pieces that have engulfed our hearts and souls and have captivated even the most discerning of art and rug folks. NOT ONE OTHER PIECE has come close to owning the very Sunset, Canyon, and Sky hues like this one has. NOT ONE OTHER PIECE has shown us how perfect imperfection is from a composition standpoint - speaking directly to the nature of the first half of the rug compared to the second half of the rug, and just how "off" they are - one being more straight-lined and distinct, and the other have a bit more curvaceousness to it, and a freer hand. The naive and asymmetrical nature of the design lends itself to its age, as these weavers wove from the heart and raw emotion, giving us a 1-of-1 Masterpiece village carpet. Will it go to the Mountains of Montana to echo inside what the views see out of the window?? A large ranch in Texas to honor the climate and the terrain? Maybe a sleek home in Austin, or a Farmhouse in Virginia surrounded by 100-year-old trees? Perhaps a multimillion-dollar modern build in the Hills of California? A high-rise in Dubai? Swiss Vacation Ski-home? A New York Art Collector's Living room? Oh, maybe a Florida Estate with horses on the property. No, a hillside North Carolina residence with a knack for quality decor. NO, a Seattle tech person's home that actually has good taste and fights against the modern aesthetic their industry is known to gravitate towards! Wait, does it fit in the living room of our own stucco California Bungalow???!! I have no idea what the future for this piece holds, but damn, I'm excited for the new owners to marvel at this beauty the way it ought to be. From the remote villages of Persia, to who knows where, but I know the legacy of the piece will continue, and the weavers and artisans of this piece should be proud of the treasure they created well over a century ago...
This rug is one-of-a-kind, only one available.
Because of the nature and age of these older/antique handmade pieces, irregularities and age-related wear are likely to exist and are not considered defects.
Any questions about this rug? Don't hesitate to reach out!
We always recommend a high-quality custom cut pad for any and all rugs; these pads are made for hand-knotted rugs. They create a body and support the knots of the rug, as well as prevent it from slipping and sliding.
A note from us to you: Buying a rug is special; it's not just you finding the rug, but also the rug finding you. Think about the many coincidences that have to occur for you to find the rug of your dreams. Our rugs are woven by nomads in the villages and remote mountainous regions of the major rug weaving districts across the world. All of our rugs are genuinely old and one-of-a-kind. Like anything old and unique, they are filled with character, soul, and story. The story of a rug is something we think about a lot; who was the weaver(s)? Did they weave it for personal use, commerce, to gift, or trade? Who was the second owner, and the third!? Sometimes the little motifs and symbols in rugs can help tell the story, but we will never truly know - there's something beautiful about that. Alas, our joy is to curate these incredible pieces that speak to us, and to pass them along to their new owners to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come; both continuing to add to the story of the rug, and to the story of the new owners.
