About: UNMATCHED. 1 OF 1. Never again will we lay eyes on something like this in the rug world.  These are pieces that don't surface and circulate around in the public eye, not because of their rare size, or mint condition, not because of the incredible wool pile or because it is from the turn of the century - but because pieces as beautiful as this tend to stay within the families of the previous owners and become family heirlooms within that lucky family - but this piece must have slipped through the cracks and reached the hands of the public and I was lucky enough to acquire it.  I have sent it off to master weavers overseas to put their love, energy, and masterful expertise into it and tediously restore it back to its original beauty.  This piece is ~ 120 years old and in Mint Condition.  I call this the Pablo Picasso Serapi because it has broken all barriers and shattered all expectations of what we normally consider a Serapi - this is what Picasso did with his art.  He almost created a new movement using shapes and creating lines and strokes to pacify our eyes and keep our imaginations and soul busy.  This piece does the same - it destroys all thought of what a standard Serapi is, and jolts the eyes into another universe the moment we start to digest the color palette these master weavers used over a century ago.  Staggering Medallion boldly claims the center, but the supporting cast could all be lead stars by themselves.  Naive geometric motifs are woven to speak ot the primitive part of the subconscious mind - arrows, "x's" diamonds, circles, and other simple yet primal shapes and motifs seem familiar since the beginning of our memory - and somehow bring the kid out of us while admiring this Mind-Blowing Art captivating our eyes as adults despite living a life seeing the most beautiful views, sunrises, cityscapes, mountain peaks, and more.  Yes, this is a highly-photogenic rug, but NOTHING compares to it in person - you can literally feel the essence of the weavers.  Looking at this piece, and then touching it takes you back to the villages where this was woven by master artisans; both in the weaving stage, but of course, in the wool dying stage as well.  How do we get these colors? Terracotta, Clay, and Warm Amber with the counterintuitive amount of sage, seafoam, and olive green. Then, an incredible band of Bakshayesh ice blue just to interrupt the hypnosis that this piece puts you in.  The way Picasso used his brush was on pure instinct - and that naive and impromptu nature of these motifs, the space between each counterpart motif, and the freedom to roam your eyes - This is why I call this the Pablo Picasso Serapi.

This rug is one-of-a-kind, only one in the world, no others are available.

Because of the nature and age of these older/antique handmade pieces, irregularities and age-related wear are likely to exist and are not considered defects.

Any questions about this rug? Don't hesitate to reach out!

We always recommend a high-quality custom-cut pad for any and all rugs; these pads are made for hand-knotted rugs. They create a body and support the knots of the rug, as well as prevent it from slipping and sliding.

A note from us to you: Buying a rug is special; it's not just you finding the rug, but also the rug finding you. Think about the many coincidences that have to occur for you to find the rug of your dreams. Our rugs are woven by nomads in the villages and remote mountainous regions of the major rug-weaving districts across the world. All of our rugs are genuinely old and one-of-a-kind. Like anything old and unique, they are filled with character, soul, and story. The story of a rug is something we think about a lot; who was the weaver(s)? Did they weave it for personal use, commerce, to gift, or trade? Who was the second owner, and the third!? Sometimes the little motifs and symbols in rugs can help tell the story, but we will never truly know - there's something beautiful about that. Alas, our joy is to curate these incredible pieces that speak to us, and to pass them along to their new owners to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come; both continuing to add to the story of the rug, and to the story of the new owners.
